OPIC Redeveloping Agbara Estate

Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation has commenced the redevelopment of the OPIC Agbara Estate in order to further boost the state government’s urban renewal initiative.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor/Managing Director, OPIC, Babajide Odusolu, the redevelopment, will entail the creation of new gated residential zones and the provision of modern infrastructure in the entire estate.

He noted that the estate was due for redevelopment as one of the foremost industrial layouts in the country, covering a landmass in excess of 6,000 hectares and serving as a commercial and industrial node linking Ogun and Lagos states.

On completion of the first phase of the redevelopement project, OPIC will deliver a minimum of two new residential clusters consisting 60 units of two-bedroom terrace bungalows and 20 units of three-bedroom semi-detached duplexes in addition to a new residential zone that would provide over 150 serviced plots.

Life in LASPOTECH

At the inception of the Institution, the first five Academic Departments were run in a manner that did not permit effective co-ordination of related disciplines, and with the increase in the number of programmes, it became imperative to reorganize the various programmes. As a result of this, in April 1982, all the academic departments which had risen to 29 were grouped into five Schools, each under a Director.

The Polytechnic has over 30,000 students running different programmes. LASPOTECH has earned a reputation as one of the foremost Polytechnics in Africa in the fields of Management, Agriculture, Engineering, Environmental Studies and Technology. This is seen in the placement of our diplomats in various organizations, government ministries and parastatals.

All the schools and departments are active in research and in teaching, both of which are subject to external assessment. The Quality Control body for the monitoring of Polytechnic Education, the National Board For Technical Education (NBTE), has mechanisms for monitoring teaching, learning as well as research.

The School Library

LASPOTECH Libraries are made up of the main Library at Ikorodu and two branch Libraries in our satellite campuses at Isolo and Surulere.

The classification of the resources of the Library is by the Library of Congress (LC). Our resources include books, journals, CD, VCD, DVD, e-books and other valuable resources. The computerization of the library has been completed using the X-LIB software which is a Nigerian Initiative.

There is one-unit compulsory first semester course for all ND I Students; Library Users Education, which is taught and evaluated by academic staff of the Library. Its objective is to introduce students to effective use of the library.

The V-Sat has recently been installed in the Library to enhance access to global academic resources available on the net. The library has created an ICT unit that assist lecturers and students to access various academic data base and resources on the Internet.

The library opening hours are as follows:

Monday – Friday: 8.00am – 8.00pm
Saturday: 9.00am – 6.00pm
Sunday: 12.00pm – 6.00pm

LASU EXTERNAL STUDENTS PROTEST SUBSTANDARD ACADEMIC PROGRAMME,OTHERS

LASU EXTERNAL STUDENTS PROTEST SUBSTANDARD ACADEMIC PROGRAMME,OTHERSSome 200 external students of the Lagos State University (LASU) on Monday staged a protest at the entrance to the Lagos State Government House, Alausa, Ikeja.

Displaying placards with different inscriptions, the protesters chanted solidarity songs and complained of what they termed “substandard part-time programme’’ being run by the school authorities.

They condemned the non-release of their examination results and poor treatment by the school’s authorities among others.

Bolaji Azeez, Speaker of the Students Representative Council (SRC) of LASU, who led the protest, told reporters that the part-time students deserved the same quality of instruction and treatment given to the regular students.

He, however, said the way in which the external programme of the school was being run was not good enough.

Azeez alleged that the university authorities were not issuing identity cards to the external students while examinations were conducted irregularly contrary to the practice in normal academic programmes.

The speaker said that the external students did not know when they would end their academic programmes as the university authorities had not released their past examination results.

“We in the external programme of LASU are tired of the inferior academic programme and the way we are being treated by the school authorities.

“Since 2012, LASU has only conducted three examinations. This is at variance with the system anywhere in the world.

“Also, our institution has consistently exploited us by asking us to pay for identification cards that we have never been issued.

“Some students cannot even beat their chests and proclaim themselves as students of LASU because they are yet to be issued their admission letters. Worse still, many students have been waiting endlessly to get their results released.

“The lecturers who teach us are second-rated and we do not know what they want us to make out of the whole thing.

“With all these problems, the students were made to pay between N68,000 and N75,000 as school fees, much higher than what the regular students are paying. Is it a sin to be part-time students? `’

Azeez said that the students had written a letter to Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State since July to complain about the development, but the union has yet to receive any response.

He urged the governor to respond to all their complaints in order to save their academic career.

Mr Hakeem Animashaun, the Special Assistant to the governor on Education and Youth Development, who attended to the students, commended them for the peaceful way they conducted themselves.

He promised them that he would convey their message to the governor.
