If tears could build a stairway
and thoughts a memory lane
I’d walk right up to heaven
and bring you home again.
No Farewell words were spoken
No time to say good-bye
You were gone before I knew it
And only God knows why.
My heart’s still active in sadness
And secret tears still flow
What it meant to lose you
No one can ever know.
But now I know you want us
To mourn for you no more
To remember all the happy times
Life still has much in store.
Since you’ll never be forgotten
I pledge to you today
A hallowed place within my heart
Is where you’ll always stay.

18.On October 28th, 2010 my mother attended a funeral being held for the daughter of a close friend. When she returned home with the program I noticed that “If Tears Could Build A Stairway” was on the back. As I read it, the words touched me so profoundly that I felt compelled to write a song based (in part) on its wording. After re-reading the poem, I sat down with my guitar and completed the song.What I didn’t know it at the time was that my own father’s death was 0nly two weeks away. When I played “If Tears Could Build A Stairway” at my father’s funeral, there wasn’t a dry eye in the auditorium.I’ll be forever grateful to whomever wrote the poem.
