FROM ODIFA, ANTIDOTE TO ADDICTION

A student of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Damilola Odifa, has published her first book titled The Golden Cage.

With the publication of the 52-page work, she believes she has got closer to her dreams of communicating ideas to people.

A short note that accompanies the book indicates that she has compassion for human lives and a passion for motivating youths.

In the preliminary pages, the writer indicated that the book was written for teenage Christians with the purpose of enlightening and guiding them to walk in God’s light, as well as encouraging them to adopt and keep good habits.

According to her, the central idea of The Golden Cage is identifying and overcoming addiction.

The book explains the differences between habit and addiction, and also expatiates on the causes of addiction among teenagers. These include bad exposure and peer pressure. According to Odifa, parental attitude and control also plays a great part in forming of addictions.

The book outlines the several consequences of addiction and its warning signs. Chief among negative addiction is the time-killer, which Odifa identifies as procrastination. Another major one dicussed is sexual addiction, while four types of behaviour of teenagers in the cage of addiction are outlined.

But the most important aspect of the compact book is where Odifa provides different ways of breaking off every negative addiction discussed, including masturbation. This aspect spans 27 per cent of the entire book. The spiritual aspect, which includes disposition to ministry and calling, is also emphasised as important.

In all, The Golden Cage is a book to be read by parents, teachers and teenagers, as it will help to identify and avoid tendencies to addiction.
