MTN keeps sending adverts I do not want or need to my phone. I have told them to stop severally but their answer is always the same.”You will be removed from our campaign database within 24 hrs. Thank you”. But do they? No! Within 24hrs they will continue sending you those useless adverts as if they own your phone. And suddenly you realize that MTN has practically taken over what messages you receive on your phone-whether you like it or not! You also ask yourself can they do it in South Africa? Of course they cannot. But why do they do it here? It’s because our supervision and control institutions are not serious and are open to being bought over with all sorts of gifts including free tours to South Africa etc.
I will either sue MTN through a class action or port myself to Etisalat or Glo. But before doing so what can those on other networks tell us about similar experiences?
On 4th February I received the following message from MTN
“Congratulations! Its 13 yrs since you joined the MTN family. Get 500% on your first recharge. Offer valid till month end. Thank you for choosing MTN!”
Having not won a dime or gotten any compensation for loyalty to MTN for 13 yrs I did not suspect it was a fake message from MTN.I therefore recharged with a N1500 card. But up till now I have not received one kobo of the promised bonus from them! And my wife told me there are other bogus/fake offers from MTN for weekends too
I am going to port myself on Etisalat or Glo
The next dubious scheme is the one they call MTN Extratime. Their advert shows Tiwa Savage whose car broke down in a forest or desolate spot. She was portrayed smiling after using the scheme. But what happened in my case? Tiwa Savage’s experience caught up with me between Ondo and Ore in a deep forest. Confidently I got down like Tiwa and asked for Extratime. And what was MTN’s reply? They said i was not qualified until I recharge with N500 for the month. This was less than 10 days after I recharged same phone in the same month with N1500! It was not that I had no money. if my car did not have a problem in the midst of a jungle I would never have asked for their measly N100 or N150 extra time with a 10% deductible charge. Long and short of the story is that the scheme failed woefully and probably might have done same to thousands of other Nigerians.
Is MTN a money-lender? How and why was this scheme and the 10 % surcharge approved? I may have to raise the money-lending issue in a court of law and still port away to Etisalat or Glo .
4.Time-wasting Daily Trivia Promotional Questions
Through these questions and the laborious process the scheme takes one through you can gauge how deceptively the crooked minds of those in MTN Marketing Dept work. They say it is free. That is absolute rubbish. This is because the trivia is only structured to take you on a merry-go-round until they deceptively invite you at a later stage to pay money for a higher stake/prize.
Public dishonesty taken to the extreme which will also lead me to porting with either Etisalat or Glo
5.MTN Educational Bundle
Here is what MTN says about it.
“to help you unleash the genius in your child, MTN in partnership with Intel brings you the MTN education bundle, specially designed to make learning a fun and most rewarding experience for your children. It’s a laptop that comes preloaded with rich educational content specially designed for children from nursery to senior secondary, to enable them learn and explore the world through the internet. Brush up their math, English and science skills, explore the world with the rich Encyclopedia Britannica alongside educative games and other learning tools. The MTN education bundle also comes with free internet access and full parental control so you can relax knowing that your children can only access safe & friendly websites……..”
“Bundle Options Price
Zinox smart netbook + 3months internet access (750MB) n71, 500
Zinox smart convertible netbook + 3months internet access (750MB) n83, 000
Samsung intel netbook (np-102) + 3months internet access (1.5GB) n57, 500
Samsung intel laptop (np-300) + 3months internet access (1.5GB) n97, 000″
Some questions relating to the “educational bundle” are as follows:
1. Was this “educational bundle” supposed to be used with any Nigerian curriculum? There was no single evidence in their proposal. In fact it all looked like there was no professional advice by any Nigerian teacher for its content compilation. There was nothing specifically for WAEC,NECO or JAMB. We guess this was so because the content was not really compiled to help solve the usual educational problems of the Nigerian child. It was more of a lazy grab of freebies from the internet meant to impress parents to dish out money for their laptops. In other words there was really no help to upgrade students’ “learning skills and close their knowledge gaps” as stated in related MTN advert.
2. Why was the content presented as if the items were exclusive when they are not Almost all of them including Encyclopedia Britannica and thousand of e-books are available free of charge on the net! Is that not what we call 419 in Nigeria?
3.If is there any other item in the advert which best displays MTN’s meanness it is the “bundle options prices”? The internet services included in each bundle has a limit over 3 months! But how can a student going through the Encyclopedia Britannica use the data allowance from MTN over 3 months? How can you use 1.5GB for more than 2 to 5 days realistically? Of course, MTN knows Its being deceitful and is only interested in selling more internet data bundles and not helping educate anyone’s child.
MTN’s Educational Bundle is a fallacy from head to toe. Parents’ should stop spending hard-earned money on their worthless educational bundles. And I am saying this with a high sense of responsibility as an educational administrator with almost 30 yrs in the saddle
I am sending this write-up to a lawyer to use for suing MTN.
